Chapter Twelve
Tuesday
Thad
Bo Richards was sitting on the railing at the end of the ramp connecting the football field to the parking lot of the school. Before Dad and I reached him, we both cast a glance at one another.
âHey, Bo.â I tried to draw his attention. âYour momâs not here yet, huh?â
âNo, sir. But Iâm sure sheâll be here. She must have gotten off work late.â He was staring at his cell phone like he was willing it to ring.
The fall weather meant two thingsâcooler temperatures great for football practice, but it also meant the sun setting super early each afternoon. It was 6:15 p.m., and already the sky had a purple tone mixed in with the bubbling clouds, the sunlight fading fast. I looked at Dad again, reading on his face the same thought I was having.
We canât leave him here.
âDad, Iâll see you later.â I tipped my head to tell him go on.
âYup. Bo, Iâll see you tomorrow. Good work today.â Dad smiled before he turned to head to his car.
âThanks Coach.â Boâs voice was laced with a touch of pride under its hardness.
I put my bag on the concrete, and sat on the railing next to him. We were quiet, and I noticed Evaâs car still in the parking lot, seven spots away from my Bronco. I always tried to park as close to her as possible, hoping to instigate conversation.
âYou donât have to wait with me.â Bo broke our silence.
âI know. I want to.â I let the silence loom, knowing if Bo wanted to talk he would eventually. It just took patience on my part to be there when he was ready.
âOkay.â Bo took a breath and rested his phone on his leg. âYouâre lucky you get to see your Dad every day,â Bo said quickly, but I could tell he hadnât meant for it to come out soâ¦sad.
My patience was working. God had been telling me for a long time to mentor His young sheep. I had promised I would always walk through any door He opened for me, and I wasnât going to let this rare opportunity of feelings and emotions from Bo Richards, of all our players, pass by.
I sighed. âYeah, I am lucky Iâve always had him to keep me in line.â Oh, Bo if only you knew how true those words were. I decided to ask Bo a hard question. âSo, your dadâs not around?â
âNah.â Boâs face scrunched up. âHe left when I was three,â Bo put it bluntly.
âHmm, Iâm not gonna lie, that sucks. Youâre worth more than that.â Bo shrugged his shoulders, not risking a glance my way. âYou know, Coach John and I would be there for any of you who needed us, needed someone to ask questions, talk to, hang out with even.â
Bo nodded his head. I reached over to pat him on the shoulder as an old maroon Toyota Corolla pulled into the parking lot. Bo looked up and jumped off the railing as the car came to a halt in front of us and I could see Boâs mom through the window.
